About George Duffield
George Duffield Jr. was a 19th-century American Presbyterian minister and hymnodist, best known for authoring the Christian hymn "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus." Born in 1818, he was a graduate of Yale College and Union Theological Seminary. He went on to serve as a pastor at various Presbyterian churches in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Michigan.
Duffield was inspired to write "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus" following the death of his colleague, Dudley A. Tyng, in 1858. The hymn was first published in *The Church Psalmist* in 1859. It became his most enduring contribution to Christian hymnody.
In addition to his most famous work, Duffield's hymn catalog includes "Blessed Saviour, Thee I love," "Parted for some anxious days," "Praise to our heavenly Father, God," and "Slowly in sadness and in tears." He was the son of the Rev. Dr. George Duffield and the father of Samuel W. Duffield. George Duffield Jr. died in 1888.
