About Isaac Watts
Isaac Watts was born on July 17, 1674, in Southampton, England. He was an English Congregational minister, theologian, and logician who is historically recognized as the "Father of English Hymnody." Raised in a Nonconformist family, Watts faced religious restrictions due to his father's dissenting beliefs, an experience that shaped his lifelong commitment to Christian worship.
Watts authored approximately 600 to 750 hymns during his lifetime, driven by a dissatisfaction with the traditional practice of exclusively singing psalms in church. His work, *The Psalms of David: Imitated in the Language of the New Testament*, was a significant collection published in 1719. This collection included his most famous hymn, "Joy to the World," which remains a staple of Christian worship.
Among his other enduring hymns are "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "O God, Our Help in Ages Past," "Alas! and Did My Saviour Bleed," and "Behold the Glories of the Lamb." Watts' hymns were influential during the First Great Awakening, helping to shape the musical and devotional life of the English-speaking church. He passed away on November 25, 1748, in Stoke Newington, London, leaving behind a vast body of work that continues to be sung by Christians around the world.
