About Martin Luther
Martin Luther (1483–1546) was a German priest, theologian, and author who became the seminal figure of the Protestant Reformation. He was also a prolific hymn writer who composed both lyrics and melodies for congregational use. Luther believed music was a "gift of God" and placed it in high regard, second only to theology.
He sought to restore congregational singing in the German language to the church. His hymns were intended to teach, comfort, and inspire worship among believers. He often utilized his musical gifts to support his ministry and spread the gospel.
Among his most enduring contributions to Christian worship is the hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" (Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott). Other well-known hymns from his pen include "Dear Christians, One and All Rejoice" (Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g'mein) and "From Depths of Woe I Cry to Thee" (Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir).
