About Sarah F. Adams
Sarah F. Adams, born Sarah Fuller Flower Adams in 1805, was an English poet and hymn writer. She was born in Harlow, Essex, and later lived in London. Her father was Benjamin Flower, a journalist and political reformer. In 1834, she married William Bridges Adams, a civil engineer and inventor.
Adams was a member of the Unitarian congregation at South Place Chapel in London. For her pastor, William Johnson Fox, she contributed 13 hymns to the 1841 collection *Hymns and Anthems*. Her most famous work, "Nearer, My God, to Thee," was written that same year and was inspired by the story of Jacob's dream in Genesis 28.
Her other hymns include "He sendeth sun, He sendeth shower," "Arise, my soul, arise," "Part in peace, with deep thanksgiving," and "Gently fall the dews of eve." Sarah F. Adams passed away in 1848.
