About The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir
The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir is a multi-ethnic, non-denominational gospel choir based at The Brooklyn Tabernacle, a Christian church in downtown Brooklyn, New York. The choir was founded in 1973 with just eight members and is directed by Carol Cymbala, who is also the wife of the church’s senior pastor, Jim Cymbala. The ensemble is composed primarily of vocally untrained church members, and its ministry emphasizes prayer and the proclamation of the Christian gospel through music.
Carol Cymbala, who does not read or write music, creates songs for the choir through the power of the Holy Spirit. Under her direction, the choir has grown from its small beginnings into a globally recognized ensemble. They have performed at major venues including Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and Madison Square Garden, and have recorded numerous albums and videos throughout their history.
The choir’s catalog includes well-known recordings such as “Total Praise,” “Order My Steps,” “I Will Not Be Moved: Live,” “Favorite Song of All,” “Songs From the Altar,” and “Praise Him... Live!” Their work has earned them multiple Grammy Awards, including for Best Roots Gospel Album, as well as multiple Dove Awards.
