About Will Lamartine Thompson
Will Lamartine Thompson (1847–1909) was an American composer, lyricist, and music publisher known for his enduring contributions to Christian hymnody. Born in East Liverpool, Ohio, he received formal musical training at the New England Conservatory of Music and later in Leipzig, Germany. After facing early rejections from commercial publishers, Thompson founded the W. L. Thompson Music Company to publish his own works, demonstrating a practical business sense alongside his creative gifts.
Though he initially found success writing secular and patriotic songs, Thompson later dedicated himself to composing hymns and gospel music. He was a member of the Churches of Christ, and his faith deeply informed his later work. Known for his disciplined creative process, he often jotted down song ideas in verse form whenever inspiration struck.
Thompson’s catalog includes several hymns that remain in use today. Among his best-known works are "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling," a widely sung invitation hymn, as well as "Jesus Is All the World to Me," "Lead Me Gently Home, Father," and "There's a Great Day Coming." He died in New York City, leaving behind a body of gospel songs that continue to appear in Christian worship.
