William Bradbury

William Batchelder Bradbury (1816–1868) was an American musician, composer, and businessman who became a foundational figure in 19th-century church music. He is widely recognized for his significant contributions to American hymnody and the development of Sunday School music. Bradbury served as an organist and music director at churches in New York City, including the Baptist Tabernacle, before traveling to Europe in 1847 to study piano, harmony, and composition under German masters. Bradbury compiled numerous collections of hymns and children’s songs, such as *The Golden Shower of S.S. Melodies* (1862). His compositions are noted for their simple, natural melodies and harmonies, which made them accessible to congregations. Among his most enduring works are the music for "Jesus Loves Me" (1862), "Just as I Am" (1849), "Sweet Hour of Prayer" (1845), "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us," and "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less." His work was popularized globally by evangelists such as Dwight L. Moody and Ira Sankey, helping to establish the genre of Sunday School songs that remains a staple in Christian worship.
