Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(46) Hadad.--The name of a Syrian deity, a form of the sun-god. (Comp. the royal titles, Ben-hadad and Hadadezer, 1Chronicles 18:3, and the Note on 2Kings 5:18.) Hadad is the same as Dadi, a Syrian title of Rimmon. Perhaps the classical Attis is equivalent to Dadis. The cry of the vintagers (h?d?d) seems to show that Hadad, like Bacchus, was regarded as the giver of the grapes (Isaiah 16:9-10).Which smote Midian.--A glimpse of the restless feuds which prevailed from time immemorial between these tribes and peoples of kindred origin. Like the judges of Israel, the kings of Edom seem to have been raised to their position owing to special emergencies. The field of Moab.--That is, the open country.Avith.--Like Dinhabah, and Pai, and Masretah, unknown beyond this passage. In the Hebrew of Chron. it is spelt, Ayuth; in Genesis 36 Awith. The letters w and y have been transposed in our text.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewWhen Hushamחוּשָׁ֑ם (ḥū·šām)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 2367: Husham -- a king of Edomdied,וַיָּ֖מָת (way·yā·māṯ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4191: To die, to killHadadהֲדַ֣ד (hă·ḏaḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1908: Hadad -- three Edomitessonבֶּן־ (ben-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Bedad,בְּדַ֗ד (bə·ḏaḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 911: Bedad -- an Edomitewho defeatedהַמַּכֶּ֤ה (ham·mak·keh)Article | Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 5221: To strikeMidianמִדְיָן֙ (miḏ·yān)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4080: Midian -- a son of Abraham and Keturah, also his descendants and the region where they settled in the countryבִּשְׂדֵ֣ה (biś·ḏêh)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 7704: Field, landof Moab,מוֹאָ֔ב (mō·w·’āḇ)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 4124: Moab -- a son of Lot,also his descendants and the territory where they settledreignedוַיִּמְלֹ֨ךְ (way·yim·lōḵ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4427: To reign, inceptively, to ascend the throne, to induct into royalty, to take counselin his place.תַּחְתָּ֜יו (taḥ·tāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 8478: The bottom, below, in lieu ofAnd the nameוְשֵׁ֥ם (wə·šêm)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 8034: A nameof his cityעִיר֖וֹ (‘î·rōw)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 5892: Excitementwas Avith.עֲוִֽית׃ (‘ă·wîṯ)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 5762: Avith -- a place in EdomJump to PreviousAvith Bedad City Country Dead Death Defeated Died Dieth Field Fields Hadad Husham Midian Mid'ian Moab Overcame Reign Reigned Smote Stead Struck Succeeded
