Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) David's instructions to the eight spiritual chiefs.Zadok and Abiathar the priests were of coordinate rank, as representing the two lines of Eleazar and Ithamar. (Comp. Notes on 1Chronicles 6:4, sqq., and 1Chronicles 24:3. ) On 1Chronicles 15:5 the meanings of three of these names have been suggested. Of the others, Zadok imports just, perhaps equivalent to Zedekiah, Jah is just; Abiathar, the Father (i.e., God) excels; She-maiah, Jah heareth; Eliel, God (and none else) is God (i.e., Divine); Amminadab, the Clansman (i.e., the Lord) is bounteous. Thus the very names of those who conducted this great religious event expressed to themselves and others the high spiritual truths that Jehovah the Lord is righteous, the Author and Bestower of all knowledge and excellence and working power; that He alone is God; and that He hears prayers, as being a gracious Father unto all His creatures.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewDavidדָוִ֔יד (ḏā·wîḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jessesummonedוַיִּקְרָ֣א (way·yiq·rā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7121: To call, proclaim, readthe priestsהַכֹּֽהֲנִ֑ים (hak·kō·hă·nîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3548: PriestZadokלְצָד֥וֹק (lə·ṣā·ḏō·wq)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6659: Zadok -- the name of several Israelitesand Abiatharוּלְאֶבְיָתָ֖ר (ū·lə·’eḇ·yā·ṯār)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 54: Abiathar -- 'the great one is father', an Israelite priestand the Levitesוְלַלְוִיִּ֗ם (wə·lal·wî·yim)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine pluralStrong's 3881: Levites -- descendant of LeviUriel,לְאֽוּרִיאֵ֤ל (lə·’ū·rî·’êl)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 222: Uriel -- 'flame of God', two IsraelitesAsaiah,עֲשָׂיָה֙ (‘ă·śā·yāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6222: Asaiah -- four IsraelitesJoel,וְיוֹאֵ֣ל (wə·yō·w·’êl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3100: Joel -- probably 'the LORD is God', the name of a number of IsraelitesShemaiah,שְׁמַֽעְיָ֔ה (šə·ma‘·yāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 8098: Shemaiah -- 'Yah hears', the name of a number of IsraelitesEliel,וֶאֱלִיאֵ֖ל (we·’ĕ·lî·’êl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 447: Eliel -- 'my God is God', the name of several Israelitesand Amminadab.וְעַמִּינָדָֽב׃ (wə·‘am·mî·nā·ḏāḇ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 5992: Amminadab -- 'my kinsman is noble', the name of several IsraelitesJump to PreviousAbiathar Abi'athar Amminadab Ammin'adab Asaiah Asai'ah David Eliel Eli'el Joel Jo'el Levites Priests Shemaiah Shemai'ah Summoned Uriel Uri'el Zadok
