Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(2-4) Branches and settlements of the Hurites.(2) Reaiah (or Jehoraah) the son of Shobal . . .--See 1Chronicles 2:52, which also calls Shobal "father of Kirjath-jearim." 1Chronicles 2:53 adds that the Zorathites (Authorised Version, Zareathites) came of the clans of Kirjath-jearim. The present verse supplements the data of 1 Chronicles 2, by putting the clans of Zorah in immediate genealogical connection with Shobal. Their names--Ahumai and Lahad--occur nowhere else.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewReaiahוּרְאָיָ֤ה (ū·rə·’ā·yāh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7211: Reaiah -- 'Yah has seen', three Israelitessonבֶן־ (ḇen-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Shobalשׁוֹבָל֙ (šō·w·ḇāl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7732: Shobal -- 'flowing', an Edomite, also two Israeliteswas the father ofהוֹלִ֣יד (hō·w·lîḏ)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3205: To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineageJahath,יַ֔חַת (ya·ḥaṯ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3189: Jahath -- 'He will snatch up', the name of several Israelitesand Jahathוְיַ֣חַת (wə·ya·ḥaṯ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3189: Jahath -- 'He will snatch up', the name of several Israeliteswas the father ofהֹלִ֔יד (hō·lîḏ)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3205: To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineageAhumaiאֲחוּמַ֖י (’ă·ḥū·may)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 267: Ahumai -- a descendant of Judahand Lahad.לָ֑הַד (lā·haḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3855: Lahad -- a man of JudahTheseאֵ֖לֶּה (’êl·leh)Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, thosewere the clansמִשְׁפְּח֥וֹת (miš·pə·ḥō·wṯ)Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 4940: A family, circle of relatives, a class, a species, sort, a tribe, peopleof the Zorathites.הַצָּֽרְעָתִֽי׃ (haṣ·ṣā·rə·‘ā·ṯî)Article | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6882: Zorathites -- inhabitants of ZorahJump to PreviousBegat Begot Clans Families Jahath Reaiah Re-Ai'ah Shobal Zorathites
