Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(43) The rest of the Amalekites that were escaped.--Literally, the remnant of the survivors (peletah, an abstract collective word) belonging to Amalek. These Amalekites are usually supposed to have been some who had taken refuge in Seir from Saul and David's exterminating wars (1Samuel 14:48; 1Samuel 15:7; 2Samuel 8:12. Comp. 1Chronicles 1:36, where Amalek appears as a partly Edomite stock.)Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewand struck downוַיַּכּ֕וּ (way·yak·kū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5221: To strikethe remnantשְׁאֵרִ֥ית (šə·’ê·rîṯ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 7611: Rest, residue, remnant, remainderof the Amalekitesלַעֲמָלֵ֑ק (la·‘ă·mā·lêq)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 6002: Amalek -- a descendant of Esau, also his posteritywho had escaped.הַפְּלֵטָ֖ה (hap·pə·lê·ṭāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 6413: Deliverance, an escaped portionAnd they have livedוַיֵּ֣שְׁבוּ (way·yê·šə·ḇū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marrythereשָׁ֔ם (šām)AdverbStrong's 8033: There, then, thithertoעַ֖ד (‘aḏ)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilethisהַזֶּֽה׃ (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatday.הַיּ֥וֹם (hay·yō·wm)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3117: A dayJump to PreviousAmalek Amalekites Amal'ekites Death Destroyed Dwell Dwelt Escaped Killed Living-Place Remaining Remnant Rest Safely Smite Smote Struck
