Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(32) Shimeah is essentially the same word as Shimeam (1Chronicles 9:38). The latter is a mimmated form (i.e., a more ancient form of the noun, with the original ending m).And these also dwelt with their brethren in Jerusalem, over against them.--Literally, And they also, before their brethren, dwelt in Jerusalem with their brethren. The verse seems to tell us that of all the stock of Gibeon only the branch of Mikloth-Shimeah settled in Jerusalem. When, we are not informed. Some think the reference is to the repeopling of Jerusalem after the Restoration (Nehemiah 11:1). "Before their brethren."--Before in Heb. means east, as behind means west. The clans in question dwelt in Jerusalem, to the east of their fellow-tribesmen in Gibeon. With their brethren--that is, with the other Benjamite clans settled in Jerusalem (1Chronicles 8:16-28).Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewand Mikloth,וּמִקְל֖וֹת (ū·miq·lō·wṯ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4732: Mikloth -- a Benjamite, also an officer of Davidwho was the father ofהוֹלִ֣יד (hō·w·lîḏ)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3205: To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineageShimeah.שִׁמְאָ֑ה (šim·’āh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 8039: Shimah -- a BenjamiteTheseהֵ֗מָּה (hêm·māh)Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: Theyalsoוְאַף־ (wə·’ap̄-)Conjunctive waw | ConjunctionStrong's 637: Meaning accession, yea, adversatively thoughlivedיָשְׁב֥וּ (yā·šə·ḇū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryalongsideנֶ֧גֶד (ne·ḡeḏ)PrepositionStrong's 5048: A front, part opposite, a counterpart, mate, over against, beforetheir relativesאֲחֵיהֶ֛ם (’ă·ḥê·hem)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 251: A brother, )in Jerusalem.בִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (ḇî·rū·šā·lim)Preposition-b | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3389: Jerusalem -- probably 'foundation of peace', capital city of all IsraelJump to PreviousBegat Begot Dwelt Jerusalem Kinsmen Mikloth Opposite Over-Against Relatives Shimeah Shim'e-Ah
