Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(18) Let thine handmaid find grace.--In other words, Hannah's reply to his loving farewell asked the old man to think kindly of her, and to pray for her with his mighty power of prayer.Did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.--A beautiful example of the composing influence of prayer. "Hannah had cast her burden upon the Lord, and so her own spirit was relieved of its load. She now returned to the family feast, and ate her portion with a cheerful heart."--Speaker's Commentary.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“May your maidservantשִׁפְחָתְךָ֛ (šip̄·ḥā·ṯə·ḵā)Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 8198: Maid, maidservantfindתִּמְצָ֧א (tim·ṣā)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 4672: To come forth to, appear, exist, to attain, find, acquire, to occur, meet, be presentfavorחֵ֖ן (ḥên)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2580: Graciousness, subjective, objectivewith you,”בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ (bə·‘ê·ne·ḵā)Preposition-b | Noun - cdc | second person masculine singularStrong's 5869: An eye, a fountainsaid Hannah.וַתֹּ֕אמֶר (wat·tō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayThen [she]הָאִשָּׁ֤ה (hā·’iš·šāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 802: Woman, wife, femalewentוַתֵּ֨לֶךְ (wat·tê·leḵ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 1980: To go, come, walkon her way,לְדַרְכָּהּ֙ (lə·ḏar·kāh)Preposition-l | Noun - common singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 1870: A road, a course of life, mode of actioneatingוַתֹּאכַ֔ל (wat·tō·ḵal)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 398: To eatand noלֹא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nolongerעֽוֹד׃ (‘ō·wḏ)AdverbStrong's 5750: Iteration, continuance, again, repeatedly, still, moredowncast.וּפָנֶ֥יהָ (ū·p̄ā·ne·hā)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 6440: The faceJump to PreviousAte Bondwoman Countenance Eat Eateth Expression Eyes Handmaid Longer Maidservant Part Sad Servant Sight Something Wasn't Way
