Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(20) And called his name Samuel.--The words translated "because I have asked him of the Lord," do not explain the meaning of the name "Samuel" they simply give the reason for his mother so calling him. The name Sh'muel (Samuel) is formed from the Hebrew words Sh'mua El (a Deo exauditus), "heard of God."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSoוַיְהִי֙ (way·hî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, bein the courseלִתְקֻפ֣וֹת (liṯ·qu·p̄ō·wṯ)Preposition-l | Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 8622: A revolution, course, lapseof time,הַיָּמִ֔ים (hay·yā·mîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3117: A dayHannahחַנָּ֖ה (ḥan·nāh)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 2584: Hannah -- mother of Samuelconceivedוַתַּ֥הַר (wat·ta·har)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 2029: To conceive, become pregnantand gave birth toוַתֵּ֣לֶד (wat·tê·leḏ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 3205: To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineagea son.בֵּ֑ן (bên)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1121: A sonShe namedוַתִּקְרָ֤א (wat·tiq·rā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 7121: To call, proclaim, readhimשְׁמוֹ֙ (šə·mōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 8034: A nameSamuel,שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל (šə·mū·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 8050: Samuel -- 'name of God', a prophet of Israel[saying,] “Becauseכִּ֥י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionI have asked for himשְׁאִלְתִּֽיו׃ (šə·’il·tîw)Verb - Qal - Perfect - first person common singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 7592: To inquire, to request, to demandfrom the LORD.”מֵיְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Preposition-m | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelJump to PreviousArrived Bare Birth Bore Child Conceived Conceiveth Course Due Hannah Prayer Revolution Samuel Time Wherefore
