Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(5) Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice.--The answer at once re-assured the villagers. He had simply come to perform the usual rite of sacrifice among them. The reasons of his coming were unknown, but his mission was one alone of blessing. There was nothing unusual in his sanctifying Jesse and his sons. This was evidently the principal family in the place, and the village sheik and his sons would be the fittest persons to assist in preparing for, and then carrying out, the sacrificial rites.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrew“In peace,”שָׁל֗וֹם (šā·lō·wm)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7965: Safe, well, happy, friendly, welfare, health, prosperity, peacehe replied.וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“I have comeבָּ֔אתִי (bā·ṯî)Verb - Qal - Perfect - first person common singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goto sacrificeלִזְבֹּ֤חַ (liz·bō·aḥ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 2076: To slaughter for sacrificeto the LORD.לַֽיהוָה֙ (Yah·weh)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelConsecrate yourselvesהִֽתְקַדְּשׁ֔וּ (hiṯ·qad·də·šū)Verb - Hitpael - Imperative - masculine pluralStrong's 6942: To be set apart or consecratedand comeוּבָאתֶ֥ם (ū·ḇā·ṯem)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, gowith meאִתִּ֖י (’it·tî)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's 854: Nearness, near, with, by, at, amongto the sacrifice.”בַּזָּ֑בַח (baz·zā·ḇaḥ)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2077: A slaughter, the flesh of an animal, a sacrificeThen he consecratedוַיְקַדֵּ֤שׁ (way·qad·dêš)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6942: To be set apart or consecratedJesseיִשַׁי֙ (yi·šay)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3448: Jesse -- father of Davidand his sonsבָּנָ֔יו (bā·nāw)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1121: A sonand invitedוַיִּקְרָ֥א (way·yiq·rā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7121: To call, proclaim, readthemלָהֶ֖ם (lā·hem)Preposition | third person masculine pluralStrong's Hebrew to the sacrifice.לַזָּֽבַח׃ (laz·zā·ḇaḥ)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2077: A slaughter, the flesh of an animal, a sacrificeJump to PreviousClean Consecrate Consecrated Hallow Hallowed Invited Jesse Offering Peace Peaceably Present Sacrifice Samuel Sanctified Sanctifieth Sanctify Yourselves
