Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) And Saul cast the javelin.--The Alexandrian MS. of the LXX. and the Chaldee Version translate the Hebrew here "lifted the javelin." The probable meaning of the verb in this place is "brandished," or "aimed." It is hardly credible that if he actually threw it, David would have trusted himself a second time in the king's chamber.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewand heשָׁאוּל֙ (šā·’ūl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7586: Saul -- first king of Israel, also an Edomite and two Israeliteshurled it,וַיָּ֤טֶל (way·yā·ṭel)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2904: To pitch over, reel, to cast down, outthinking,וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“I will pinאַכֶּ֥ה (’ak·keh)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 5221: To strikeDavidבְדָוִ֖ד (ḇə·ḏā·wiḏ)Preposition-b | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jesseto the wall.”וּבַקִּ֑יר (ū·ḇaq·qîr)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7023: A wallBut Davidדָּוִ֛ד (dā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jesseeludedוַיִּסֹּ֥ב (way·yis·sōḇ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5437: To turn about, go around, surroundhimמִפָּנָ֖יו (mip·pā·nāw)Preposition-m | Noun - common plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6440: The facetwice.פַּעֲמָֽיִם׃ (pa·‘ă·mā·yim)Noun - fdStrong's 6471: A beat, foot, anvil, occurrenceJump to PreviousAvoided Balancing Blow Cast Casteth David Escaped Hand Hurled I'll Javelin Pin Pinning Presence Round Saul Smite Spear Stepped Strike Thought Turned Turneth Twice Wall
