Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(25) An hundred foreskins.--Wordsworth's note here, which he derives from Theodoret, is curious. Foreskins! why not heads? Here is a sign of Saul's suspicious and malignant spirit. He, judging for himself, impiously suspects that David would go forth and destroy some of the Israelites--Saul's own subjects--as he himself desired to destroy David, his own deliverer; and the foreskins were required as a proof that they who were killed were not Israelites. Josephus, however, with a strange exaggeration, mentions 600 heads as the price of Michal.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSaulשָׁא֜וּל (šā·’ūl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7586: Saul -- first king of Israel, also an Edomite and two Israelitesreplied,וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“Sayתֹאמְר֣וּ (ṯō·mə·rū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 559: To utter, sayto David,לְדָוִ֗ד (lə·ḏā·wiḏ)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jesse‘The kingלַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (lam·me·leḵ)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4428: A kingdesiresחֵ֤פֶץ (ḥê·p̄eṣ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2656: Pleasure, desire, a valuable thing, a matternoאֵֽין־ (’ên-)AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particleother dowryבְּמֹ֔הַר (bə·mō·har)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4119: Purchase price (of a wife)butכִּ֗י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctiona hundredבְּמֵאָה֙ (bə·mê·’āh)Preposition-b | Number - feminine singularStrong's 3967: A hundredPhilistineפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (pə·liš·tîm)Noun - proper - masculine pluralStrong's 6430: Philistines -- inhabitants of Philistiaforeskinsעָרְל֣וֹת (‘ā·rə·lō·wṯ)Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 6190: The prepuceas revengeלְהִנָּקֵ֖ם (lə·hin·nā·qêm)Preposition-l | Verb - Nifal - Infinitive constructStrong's 5358: To grudge, avenge, punishon hisהַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (ham·me·leḵ)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 4428: A kingenemies.’”בְּאֹיְבֵ֣י (bə·’ō·yə·ḇê)Preposition-b | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 341: Hating, an adversaryBut Saulוְשָׁא֣וּל (wə·šā·’ūl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 7586: Saul -- first king of Israel, also an Edomite and two Israelitesintendedחָשַׁ֔ב (ḥā·šaḇ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 2803: To think, accountto cause David’sדָּוִ֖ד (dā·wiḏ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jessedeathלְהַפִּ֥יל (lə·hap·pîl)Preposition-l | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive constructStrong's 5307: To fall, lieat the handsבְּיַד־ (bə·yaḏ-)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 3027: A handof the Philistines.פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (pə·liš·tîm)Noun - proper - masculine pluralStrong's 6430: Philistines -- inhabitants of PhilistiaJump to PreviousAvenged David Desires Desireth Dowry Enemies Except Hand Hundred King's Philistines Planned Saul Thought Vengeance
