Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(38) Make speed, haste, stay not.--Although Jonathan, of course, trusted to a certain extent the youth (probably an armour-bearer) who was with him, still he hurried this attendant away, that he might not see David, who was close by in hiding, and who, after the sign, would presently appear in sight. The next clause (1Samuel 20:39) expressly tells us how this meeting was unknown and unwitnessed. The youth was sent to the city that Jonathan might be alone once more with David.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThen Jonathanיְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ (yə·hō·w·nā·ṯān)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3083: Jonathan -- 'the LORD has given', the name of a number of Israelitescried out,וַיִּקְרָ֤א (way·yiq·rā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7121: To call, proclaim, read“Hurry!מְהֵרָ֥ה (mə·hê·rāh)AdverbStrong's 4120: A hurry, promptlyMake haste!ח֖וּשָׁה (ḥū·šāh)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 2363: To hurry, to be eager with excitement, enjoymentDo notאַֽל־ (’al-)AdverbStrong's 408: Notdelay!”תַּעֲמֹ֑ד (ta·‘ă·mōḏ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 5975: To stand, in various relationsSo the boyנַ֤עַר (na·‘ar)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5288: A boy, lad, youth, retainerpicked up the arrowוַיְלַקֵּ֞ט (way·laq·qêṭ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 3950: To pick up, to gather, to gleanand returnedוַיָּבֹ֖א (way·yā·ḇō)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, gotoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tohis master.אֲדֹנָֽיו׃ (’ă·ḏō·nāw)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 113: Sovereign, controllerJump to PreviousArrow Arrows Boy Cried Crying Delay Haste Hasten Hurry Jonathan Jonathan's Lad Master Picked Quick Quickly Speed Stand Stop Waiting Youth
