Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(27) This blessing.--That is to say, gift. Of this Abigail makes little account--it was simply an expression of her homage and good will. It was not intended, of course, for David, but for his company; but she brought it, as is the custom in the East where an inferior approaches a superior, whether as a visitor or as a suppliant, to bring in the hand gifts. Let it be given, she added, to his companions.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewNowוְעַתָּה֙ (wə·‘at·tāh)Conjunctive waw | AdverbStrong's 6258: At this time{let} thisהַזֹּ֔את (haz·zōṯ)Article | Pronoun - feminine singularStrong's 2063: Hereby in it, likewise, the one other, same, she, so much, such deed, that, giftהַבְּרָכָ֣ה (hab·bə·rā·ḵāh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 1293: Benediction, prosperityyour servantשִׁפְחָתְךָ֖ (šip̄·ḥā·ṯə·ḵā)Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 8198: Maid, maidservanthas broughtהֵבִ֥יא (hê·ḇî)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goto my lordלַֽאדֹנִ֑י (la·ḏō·nî)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 113: Sovereign, controllerbe givenוְנִתְּנָה֙ (wə·nit·tə·nāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setto the young menלַנְּעָרִ֔ים (lan·nə·‘ā·rîm)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 5288: A boy, lad, youth, retainerwho followהַמִּֽתְהַלְּכִ֖ים (ham·miṯ·hal·lə·ḵîm)Article | Verb - Hitpael - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 1980: To go, come, walk[you].אֲדֹנִֽי׃ (’ă·ḏō·nî)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 113: Sovereign, controllerJump to PreviousAccompany Blessing Handmaid Maidservant Maid-Servant Master Offering Present Servant Young
