Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(15) Then the men of Judah gave a shout.--The same verb (h?ria') occurred in 2Chronicles 13:12, in the sense of sounding an alarm with the "trumpets of alarm" (t'r-'ah.) Here our version gives the right sense. Immediately after the priests had blown a blast upon the trumpets, the warriors raised a shout or war- cry. (Comp. Judges 7:18-20).God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.--The wild panic which seized the host of Israel, when they heard the shout of their foes, is thus forcibly described. The same phrase is used in Judges 20:35, and again by the chronicler (2Chronicles 14:12). (Comp. the Vulg., "perterruit Deus Jeroboam et omnem Israel." Syriac, "the Lord routed," &c.)Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewand the menאִ֣ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personof Judahיְהוּדָ֑ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israelitesraised the battle cry.וַיָּרִ֖יעוּ (way·yā·rî·‘ū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 7321: To mar, to split the ears, shoutAnd when [they]אִ֣ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personraised the cry,בְּהָרִ֙יעַ֙ (bə·hā·rî·a‘)Preposition-b | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive constructStrong's 7321: To mar, to split the ears, shoutGodוְהָאֱלֹהִ֗ים (wə·hā·’ĕ·lō·hîm)Conjunctive waw, Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeroutedנָגַ֤ף (nā·ḡap̄)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5062: To push, gore, defeat, stub, inflictJeroboamיָֽרָבְעָם֙ (yā·rā·ḇə·‘ām)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3379: Jeroboam -- 'the people increase', the name of two Israelites kingsand allוְכָל־ (wə·ḵāl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descbeforeלִפְנֵ֥י (lip̄·nê)Preposition-l | Noun - common plural constructStrong's 6440: The faceAbijahאֲבִיָּ֖ה (’ă·ḇî·yāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 29: Abijah -- 'Yah is my father', an Israelite nameand Judah.וִיהוּדָֽה׃ (wî·hū·ḏāh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four IsraelitesJump to PreviousAbijah Abi'jah Battle Cry Defeated Fear Israel Jeroboam Jerobo'am Judah Loud Raised Routed Shout Shouted Shouting Smitten Smote Sound Struck War
