Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(13) Against the Syrians.--The attack was begun, not against both parts of the foe at once, but Joab threw the weight of his forces against the stronger division of the enemy while Abishai watched and held in check the Ammonites. His tactics were completely successful. The Syrians fled, and the Ammonites, seeing that the whole army of Israel could now be thrown upon them, retired precipitately into the city.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSo Joabיוֹאָ֗ב (yō·w·’āḇ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3097: Joab -- 'the LORD is father', three Israelitesand his troopsוְהָעָם֙ (wə·hā·‘ām)Conjunctive waw, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockadvancedוַיִּגַּ֣שׁ (way·yig·gaš)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5066: To draw near, approachto fightלַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (lam·mil·ḥā·māh)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 4421: A battle, warthe Arameans,בַּֽאֲרָ֑ם (ba·’ă·rām)Preposition-b | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 758: Aram -- Syriawho fledוַיָּנֻ֖סוּ (way·yā·nu·sū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5127: To flit, vanish awaybefore him.מִפָּנָֽיו׃ (mip·pā·nāw)Preposition-m | Noun - common plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6440: The faceJump to PreviousAdvanced Aram Aramaeans Arameans Battle Draweth Drew Fight Fled Flee Flight Forward Joab Jo'ab Nigh Presence Syrians Troops
