Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(12) Made darkness pavilions.--Psalms 18, more fully, "He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters." A word appears to have dropped out here, and in the second clause the margin, "binding (or gathering) of waters" is a more exact translation, the word differing in one letter from that used in the psalm.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewHe madeוַיָּ֥שֶׁת (way·yā·šeṯ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7896: To put, setdarknessחֹ֛שֶׁךְ (ḥō·šeḵ)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2822: The dark, darkness, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickednessa canopyסֻכּ֑וֹת (suk·kō·wṯ)Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 5521: A thicket, bootharound Him,סְבִיבֹתָ֖יו (sə·ḇî·ḇō·ṯāw)Adverb | third person masculine singularStrong's 5439: A circle, neighbour, environs, arounda gatheringחַֽשְׁרַת־ (ḥaš·raṯ-)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 2841: A combination, gathering, of watery cloudsof waterמַ֖יִם (ma·yim)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 4325: Water, juice, urine, semenand thick clouds.עָבֵ֥י (‘ā·ḇê)Noun - common plural constructStrong's 5645: An envelope, darkness, a, cloud, a copseJump to PreviousCanopy Clouds Dark Darkness Gathering Gatherings Mass Pavilions Rain Round Skies Sky Tabernacles Tent Thick Water Waters
