Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(5) Seven years and six months.--The six months is also mentioned in 2Samuel 2:11; 1Chronicles 3:4, but, as being only the fraction of a year, is generally omitted in the summary of the length of his reign, as in 2Samuel 5:4; 1Chronicles 29:27. It was the habit of the sacred historians either to omit such fractions or else to count them as whole years, thus introducing a certain element of indefiniteness into the chronology, which is very marked in the parallel narratives of the kings of Israel and of Judah.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIn Hebronבְּחֶבְרוֹן֙ (bə·ḥeḇ·rō·wn)Preposition-b | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 2275: Hebron -- 'association, league', a city in southern Judahhe reignedמָלַ֣ךְ (mā·laḵ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4427: To reign, inceptively, to ascend the throne, to induct into royalty, to take counseloverעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstJudahיְהוּדָ֔ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four Israelitessevenשֶׁ֥בַע (še·ḇa‘)Number - feminine singularStrong's 7651: Seven, seven times, a week, an indefinite numberyearsשָׁנִ֖ים (šā·nîm)Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 8141: A yearand sixוְשִׁשָּׁ֣ה (wə·šiš·šāh)Conjunctive waw | Number - masculine singularStrong's 8337: Six (a cardinal number)months,חֳדָשִׁ֑ים (ḥo·ḏā·šîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 2320: The new moon, a monthand in Jerusalemוּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֣ם (ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3389: Jerusalem -- probably 'foundation of peace', capital city of all Israelhe reignedמָלַ֗ךְ (mā·laḵ)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 4427: To reign, inceptively, to ascend the throne, to induct into royalty, to take counselthirty-threeשְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים (šə·lō·šîm)Number - common pluralStrong's 7970: Thirty, thirtiethyearsשָׁנָ֔ה (šā·nāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8141: A yearoverעַ֥ל (‘al)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descand Judah.וִיהוּדָֽה׃ (wî·hū·ḏāh)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four IsraelitesJump to PreviousHebron Israel Jerusalem Judah Months Reigned Ruling Seven Six Thirty Thirty-Three Three
