Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(17) If it be so.--The meaning becomes clearer by omitting the word "so." The sentence will then stand as follows: "If our God is able to deliver us . . . then He will do so; but if He does not deliver us, be assured that we will not serve thy gods." The three holy children are quite content to leave the whole matter in the hands of Providence. They know that the law of obedience is the first law of all, and this they are resolved to keep. There is not the slightest ground for supposing that they expected a miraculous deliverance. Their language implies no more than faithful obedience. (See Isaiah 43:2.)Is able.--They did not question His power; they did not know whether He would will to exercise the use of it. (Comp. Genesis 19:22.)Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewIfהֵ֣ן (hên)ConjunctionStrong's 2006: Lo!, there, less, whether, but, ifthe Godאֱלָהַ֙נָא֙ (’ĕ·lā·ha·nā)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common pluralStrong's 426: Godwhomדִּֽי־ (dî-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 1768: Who, which, that, becauseweאֲנַ֣חְנָא (’ă·naḥ·nā)Pronoun - first person common pluralStrong's 586: Weserveפָֽלְחִ֔ין (p̄ā·lə·ḥîn)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 6399: To pay reverence to, serveexists,אִיתַ֗י (’î·ṯay)AdverbStrong's 383: Entity, as a, particle of affirmation, there isthen He is ableיָכִ֖ל (yā·ḵil)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 3202: To be ableto deliver usלְשֵׁיזָבוּתַ֑נָא (lə·šê·zā·ḇū·ṯa·nā)Preposition-l | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive construct | first person common pluralStrong's 7804: To leave, freefromמִן־ (min-)PrepositionStrong's 4481: From, out of, by, by reason of, at, more thanthe burningיָקִֽדְתָּ֛א (yā·qiḏ·tā)Verb - Qal - Participle - feminine singular determinateStrong's 3345: To burnfieryנוּרָ֧א (nū·rā)Noun - common singulardStrong's 5135: A firefurnaceאַתּ֨וּן (’at·tūn)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 861: A fire-place, furnaceand fromוּמִן־ (ū·min-)Conjunctive waw | PrepositionStrong's 4481: From, out of, by, by reason of, at, more thanyour hand,יְדָ֥ךְ (yə·ḏāḵ)Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 3028: A handO king.מַלְכָּ֖א (mal·kā)Noun - masculine singular determinateStrong's 4430: A kingJump to PreviousAble Blazing Burning Deliver Fiery Fire Flaming Furnace Hand Rescue Safe Save Servants Serve Serving Thrown
