Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(5) I . . . put the tables in the ark which I (had) made; and there they be.--Or, and they were there, or they continued there. According to the narrative in Exodus, the ark in which the tables ultimately remained was made afterwards. The English reader must not be misled by the word "had" in "I had made." There is no pluperfect in Hebrew. The time of an action is determined not so much by the form of the verb as by its relation to the context. "I put the tables in the ark which I made, and they remained there," is the literal sense. "I made" may very well mean "I caused to be made," and refers to the ark which Bezaleel constructed under Moses' directions.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewand I went backוָאֵ֗פֶן (wā·’ê·p̄en)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 6437: To turn, to face, appear, lookdownוָֽאֵרֵד֙ (wā·’ê·rêḏ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 3381: To come or go down, descendthe mountainהָהָ֔ר (hā·hār)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2022: Mountain, hill, hill countryand placedוָֽאָשִׂם֙ (wā·’ā·śim)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 7760: Put -- to put, place, setthe tabletsהַלֻּחֹ֔ת (hal·lu·ḥōṯ)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3871: To glisten, a tablet, of stone, wood, metalin the arkבָּאָר֖וֹן (bā·’ā·rō·wn)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - common singularStrong's 727: A chest, arkI had made,עָשִׂ֑יתִי (‘ā·śî·ṯî)Verb - Qal - Perfect - first person common singularStrong's 6213: To do, makeasאֲשֶׁ֣ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatthe LORDיְהוָֽה׃ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelhad commanded me,צִוַּ֖נִי (ṣiw·wa·nî)Verb - Piel - Perfect - third person masculine singular | first person common singularStrong's 6680: To lay charge (upon), give charge (to), command, orderand thereשָׁ֔ם (šām)AdverbStrong's 8033: There, then, thitherthey have remained.וַיִּ֣הְיוּ (way·yih·yū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beJump to PreviousArk Commanded Mount Mountain Round Stones Tables Tablets Turn Turned Turning
