Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(26) And thy carcase shall be meat.--Repeated in Jeremiah 7:33, and to be fulfilled in Tophet, when they had buried until there was no more room. (Comp. also Jeremiah 15:3.)No man shall fray (i.e., frighten) them away.--Not even a woman like Rizpah, who at the foot of the gallows watched her children's bodies for half the year, and "suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night" (2Samuel 21:10). There shall be no one to do it.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewYour corpsesנִבְלָֽתְךָ֙ (niḇ·lā·ṯə·ḵā)Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 5038: A flabby thing, a carcase, carrion, an idolwill beוְהָיְתָ֤ה (wə·hā·yə·ṯāh)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person feminine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, befoodלְמַאֲכָ֔ל (lə·ma·’ă·ḵāl)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3978: An eatablefor allלְכָל־ (lə·ḵāl)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe birdsע֥וֹף (‘ō·wp̄)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5775: Flying creaturesof the airהַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (haš·šā·ma·yim)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 8064: Heaven, skyand beasts ofוּלְבֶהֱמַ֣ת (ū·lə·ḇe·hĕ·maṯ)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 929: A dumb beast, any large quadruped, animalthe earth,הָאָ֑רֶץ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landwith noוְאֵ֖ין (wə·’ên)Conjunctive waw | AdverbStrong's 369: A non-entity, a negative particleone to scare them away.מַחֲרִֽיד׃ (ma·ḥă·rîḏ)Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 2729: To shudder with terror, to fear, to hastenJump to PreviousAir Animals Beasts Birds Bodies Body Carcase Carcass Carcasses Causing Dead Drive Earth Meat Scare Sky Trembling
