Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(45) Till thou be destroyed.--Not exterminated. The root meaning of the word is connected with "smiting," and the idea seems to be to crush. (Comp. 2Kings 13:7 : "The king of Syria had destroyed them, and had made them like the dust by threshing.") This kind of destruction is consistent with what follows in Deuteronomy 28:46, and also at the end of Deuteronomy 28:48.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAllכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everytheseהָאֵ֗לֶּה (hā·’êl·leh)Article | Pronoun - common pluralStrong's 428: These, thosecursesהַקְּלָל֣וֹת (haq·qə·lā·lō·wṯ)Article | Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 7045: Vilificationwill comeוּבָ֨אוּ (ū·ḇā·’ū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goupon you.עָלֶ֜יךָ (‘ā·le·ḵā)Preposition | second person masculine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstThey will pursue youוּרְדָפ֙וּךָ֙ (ū·rə·ḏā·p̄ū·ḵā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person common plural | second person masculine singularStrong's 7291: To pursue, chase, persecuteand overtake youוְהִשִּׂיג֔וּךָ (wə·hiś·śî·ḡū·ḵā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person common plural | second person masculine singularStrong's 5381: To reach, overtakeuntilעַ֖ד (‘aḏ)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whileyou are destroyed,הִשָּֽׁמְדָ֑ךְ (hiš·šā·mə·ḏāḵ)Verb - Nifal - Infinitive construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 8045: To be exterminated or destroyedsinceכִּי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionyou did notלֹ֣א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noobeyשָׁמַ֗עְתָּ (šā·ma‘·tā)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlythe LORDיְהוָ֣ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelyour Godאֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (’ĕ·lō·he·ḵā)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeand keepלִשְׁמֹ֛ר (liš·mōr)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 8104: To hedge about, guard, to protect, attend tothe commandmentsמִצְוֺתָ֥יו (miṣ·wō·ṯāw)Noun - feminine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 4687: Commandmentand statutesוְחֻקֹּתָ֖יו (wə·ḥuq·qō·ṯāw)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2708: Something prescribed, an enactment, statuteHe gave you.צִוָּֽךְ׃ (ṣiw·wāḵ)Verb - Piel - Perfect - third person masculine singular | second person masculine singularStrong's 6680: To lay charge (upon), give charge (to), command, orderJump to PreviousCommanded Commandments Commands Complete Curses Decrees Destroyed Destruction Ear Hearken Hearkened Hearkenedst Keeping Laws Moreover Obey Observe Orders Overtake Pursue Pursued Statutes Voice
