Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) Ye have not eaten bread--but manna (Deuteronomy 8:3).Neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink.--A fact stated here only, and evidently coming from the lips of one who "knew their walking through the wilderness." "They drank of that spiritual rock that followed them; and that Rock was Christ." God cared for their physical health and strength by the natural food which He gave them, and made their natural food represent the act of feeding upon Him. It is observable also that God seems to have especially blessed the abstinence from wine and strong drink for His sake in Israel. (See Lamentations 4:7.)(7,8) See Deuteronomy 3:1-17.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewyou did notלֹ֣א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noeatאֲכַלְתֶּ֔ם (’ă·ḵal·tem)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 398: To eatbreadלֶ֚חֶם (le·ḥem)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3899: Food, bread, grainor drinkשְׁתִיתֶ֑ם (šə·ṯî·ṯem)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 8354: To imbibewineוְיַ֥יִן (wə·ya·yin)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3196: Wine, intoxicationor strong drink,וְשֵׁכָ֖ר (wə·šê·ḵār)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7941: An intoxicant, intensely alcoholic liquorso thatלְמַ֙עַן֙ (lə·ma·‘an)ConjunctionStrong's 4616: Purpose -- intentyou might knowתֵּֽדְע֔וּ (tê·ḏə·‘ū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 3045: To knowthatכִּ֛י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionIאֲנִ֥י (’ă·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iam the LORDיְהוָ֖ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelyour God.אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (’ĕ·lō·hê·ḵem)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeJump to PreviousAte Bread Drank Drink Drunk Eaten Order Strong Wine
