Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(11) Bless, Lord, his substance.--This petition is consistent with the enactment that Levi should have no land. But a blessing on his substance means a blessing to the whole land of Israel. Levi's substance Was Israel's tithe.Accept the work of his hands.--The chief "work of his hands" was mediatorial for all Israel. The "acceptance" of this work was essential to the welfare of the whole race.Smite through the loins of them that rise against him.--Rashi refers to the great war begun by the Asmonaeans. Mattathias, the father of the Maccabees, was "a priest of the sons of Joiarib from Jerusalem" (1 Maccabees 2:1). In the time of Athaliah and of Antiochus Epiphanes alike, the restorers of the worship of Jehovah, and the deliverers of the nation from a foreign yoke, were priests.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewBlessבָּרֵ֤ךְ (bā·rêḵ)Verb - Piel - Imperative - masculine singularStrong's 1288: To kneel, to bless God, man, to cursehis substance,חֵיל֔וֹ (ḥê·lōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2428: A force, an army, wealth, virtue, valor, strengthO LORD,יְהוָה֙ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHand acceptתִּרְצֶ֑ה (tir·ṣeh)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 7521: To be pleased with, to satisfy a, debtthe workוּפֹ֥עַל (ū·p̄ō·‘al)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 6467: Doing, deed, workof his hands.יָדָ֖יו (yā·ḏāw)Noun - fdc | third person masculine singularStrong's 3027: A handSmashמְחַ֨ץ (mə·ḥaṣ)Verb - Qal - Imperative - masculine singularStrong's 4272: To dash asunder, to crush, smash, violently plunge, to subdue, destroythe loinsמָתְנַ֧יִם (mā·ṯə·na·yim)Noun - mdStrong's 4975: The waist, small of the back, the loinsof those who rise against him,קָמָ֛יו (qā·māw)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6965: To arise, stand up, standand of his foesוּמְשַׂנְאָ֖יו (ū·mə·śan·’āw)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Participle - masculine plural construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 8130: To hateso they canמִן־ (min-)PrepositionStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofrise [no more].”יְקוּמֽוּן׃ (yə·qū·mūn)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine plural | Paragogic nunStrong's 6965: To arise, stand up, standJump to PreviousAccept Adversaries Arms Bless Blessing Crush Hands Hate Heart Hips Loins Please Pleased Pleasing Rise Shatter Smite Strength Strike Substance Withstanders Work Wounded
