Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(21) I took your sin . . . and I cast the dust thereof into the brook.--The stream from the rock in Horeb not only gave Israel drink, but bore away their "sin" upon its waters. "And that Rock was Christ." This identification of the sin with the material object is in harmony with the Law in Leviticus, where "sin" and "sin-offering"--"trespass" and "trespass offering"--are respectively denoted by a single word.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAndוְֽאֶת־ (wə·’eṯ-)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative caseI tookלָקַחְתִּי֮ (lā·qaḥ·tî)Verb - Qal - Perfect - first person common singularStrong's 3947: To takethatאֲשֶׁר־ (’ă·šer-)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatsinful thing,חַטַּאתְכֶ֞ם (ḥaṭ·ṭaṯ·ḵem)Noun - feminine singular construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 2403: An offence, its penalty, occasion, sacrifice, expiation, an offenderthe calfהָעֵ֗גֶל (hā·‘ê·ḡel)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5695: A, calf, one nearly grownyou had made,עֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם (‘ă·śî·ṯem)Verb - Qal - Perfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 6213: To do, makeand burned itוָאֶשְׂרֹ֣ף (wā·’eś·rōp̄)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 8313: To be, on firein the fire.בָּאֵשׁ֒ (bā·’êš)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - common singularStrong's 784: A fireThen I crushed itוָאֶכֹּ֨ת (wā·’ek·kōṯ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 3807: To bruise, violently strike[and] groundטָחוֹן֙ (ṭā·ḥō·wn)Verb - Qal - Infinitive absoluteStrong's 2912: To grind meal, to be a, concubineit toעַ֥ד (‘aḏ)PrepositionStrong's 5704: As far as, even to, up to, until, whilepowderדַּ֖ק (daq)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1851: Crushed, small, thinas fine as dust,לְעָפָ֑ר (lə·‘ā·p̄ār)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6083: Dust, clay, earth, mudand I castוָֽאַשְׁלִךְ֙ (wā·’aš·liḵ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 7993: To throw out, down, awayitעֲפָר֔וֹ (‘ă·p̄ā·rōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 6083: Dust, clay, earth, mudintoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe streamהַנַּ֖חַל (han·na·ḥal)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5158: A stream, a winter torrent, a, valley, a shaftthat came downהַיֹּרֵ֥ד (hay·yō·rêḏ)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 3381: To come or go down, descendfromמִן־ (min-)PrepositionStrong's 4480: A part of, from, out ofthe mountain.הָהָֽר׃ (hā·hār)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 2022: Mountain, hill, hill countryJump to PreviousBeat Brook Burned Burnt Calf Cast Crushed Descended Dust Mount Mountain Pieces Sin Sinful Small Stamped Thereof Threw
