Ellicott's Commentary
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(27) When the morning appeared.--This would be about five o'clock. The light showed the Egyptian their danger. The white-crested waves were seen advancing on either side, and threatening to fill up the channel. The Egyptians had to race against them; but in vain. Their chariot wheels clogged, themselves and their horses encumbered with heavy armour, they made but slow way over the soft and slimy ground; and while they were still far from shore, the floods were upon them, and overwhelmed them. In this way God "overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea."Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSo Mosesמֹשֶׁ֨ה (mō·šeh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 4872: Moses -- a great Israelite leader, prophet and lawgiverstretched outוַיֵּט֩ (way·yêṭ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5186: To stretch out, spread out, extend, incline, bendhis handיָד֜וֹ (yā·ḏōw)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 3027: A handoverעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe sea,הַיָּ֗ם (hay·yām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3220: A sea, the Mediterranean Sea, large river, an artifical basinand at daybreakלִפְנ֥וֹת (lip̄·nō·wṯ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 6437: To turn, to face, appear, lookthe seaהַיָּ֜ם (hay·yām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3220: A sea, the Mediterranean Sea, large river, an artifical basinreturnedוַיָּ֨שָׁב (way·yā·šāḇ)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, againto its normal state.לְאֵ֣יתָנ֔וֹ (lə·’ê·ṯā·nōw)Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 386: Perennial, ever-flowing, permanenceWhile the Egyptiansוּמִצְרַ֖יִם (ū·miṣ·ra·yim)Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 4713: Egyptian -- inhabitant of Egyptwere retreating,נָסִ֣ים (nā·sîm)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 5127: To flit, vanish awaythe LORDיְהוָ֛ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelswept themוַיְנַעֵ֧ר (way·na·‘êr)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5287: To shake, shake out or offintoבְּת֥וֹךְ (bə·ṯō·wḵ)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 8432: A bisection, the centrethe sea.הַיָּֽם׃ (hay·yām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3220: A sea, the Mediterranean Sea, large river, an artifical basinJump to PreviousAppeared Dawn Daybreak Destruction Egyptians Fled Fleeing Flow Flowing Forth Hand Meeting Middle Midst Morning Moses Normal Overthrew Overturned Perennial Right Routed Sea Shaketh State Strength Stretched Stretcheth Towards Turneth Turning Wonted
