ASV Ezekiel 20:8

But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me; they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

BBE Ezekiel 20:8

But they would not be controlled by me, and did not give ear to me; they did not put away the disgusting things to which their eyes were turned, or give up the images of Egypt: then I said I would let loose my passion on them to give full effect to my wrath against them in the land of Egypt.

And -- they rebel against Me, And have not been willing to hearken to Me, Each, the detestable things of their eyes, They have not cast away, And the idols of Egypt have not forsaken, And I say -- to pour out My fury on them, To complete Mine anger against them, In the midst of the land of Egypt.

Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(8) The land of Egypt.--Of this idolatrous rebellion, and of this threat of the Divine anger while they were still in Egypt, as already said, we have no specific record. But they had the same disposition then as they had afterwards; and, even without such a charge, we could infer the probability of their idolatry. It is possible that the prophet may have had in mind such incidents as are related in Numbers 14:11-20, happening while the Israelites were still in the neighbourhood of Egypt, and when the report of them would speedily have reached Egyptian ears. It is by no means necessary to suppose that in this broad and general review of the teachings of history each incident is kept in its strict chronological place. Yet idolatry in Egypt is distinctly charged upon the Israelites in Ezekiel 16:3; Ezekiel 16:19, and this verse may well refer to God's judgment for this sin suspended and delayed while they were in Egypt lest it should be misunderstood by the heathen.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewBut they rebelledוַיַּמְרוּ־ (way·yam·rū-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 4784: To be contentious or rebelliousagainst Meבִ֗י (ḇî)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's Hebrew and refusedוְלֹ֤א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noto listen.לִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ (liš·mō·a‘)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyNone of themאִ֣ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personcast awayהִשְׁלִ֔יכוּ (hiš·lî·ḵū)Verb - Hifil - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 7993: To throw out, down, awaythe abominationsשִׁקּוּצֵ֤י (šiq·qū·ṣê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 8251: Disgusting, filthy, idolatrous, an idolbefore their eyes,עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ (‘ê·nê·hem)Noun - cdc | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5869: An eye, a fountainand they did notלֹ֣א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noforsakeעָזָ֑בוּ (‘ā·zā·ḇū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 5800: To loosen, relinquish, permitthe idolsגִּלּוּלֵ֥י (gil·lū·lê)Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1544: A log, an idolof Egypt.מִצְרַ֖יִם (miṣ·ra·yim)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 4714: Egypt -- a son of Ham, also his descendants and their country in Northwest AfricaSo I resolvedוָאֹמַ֞ר (wā·’ō·mar)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayto pour outלִשְׁפֹּ֧ךְ (liš·pōḵ)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 8210: To spill forth, to expend, to sprawl outMy wrathחֲמָתִ֣י (ḥă·mā·ṯî)Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 2534: Heat, anger, poisonupon themעֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (‘ă·lê·hem)Preposition | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstand ventלְכַלּ֤וֹת (lə·ḵal·lō·wṯ)Preposition-l | Verb - Piel - Infinitive constructStrong's 3615: To be complete, at an end, finished, accomplished, or spentMy angerאַפִּי֙ (’ap·pî)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 639: The nose, nostril, the face, a person, ireagainst themבָּהֶ֔ם (bā·hem)Preposition | third person masculine pluralStrong's Hebrew inבְּת֖וֹךְ (bə·ṯō·wḵ)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 8432: A bisection, the centrethe landאֶ֥רֶץ (’e·reṣ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 776: Earth, landof Egypt.מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (miṣ·rā·yim)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 4714: Egypt -- a son of Ham, also his descendants and their country in Northwest AfricaJump to PreviousAbominations Accomplish Anger Cast Detestable Egypt Eyes Forsake Fury Hearken Idols Midst Pour Rebelled Wrath
