Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(20) That which your soul pitieth.--In the margin the pity of your soul. The word rather means in this connection love, in the sense of the object of love: "that which your soul loves." The expression in the original is a difficult one, and is used by Ezekiel on account of the alliteration with the previous clause: "the machmad of your eyes, and the machmal of your souls." (Comp. the parallel in Ezekiel 24:25 : "That whereupon they set their minds.")Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewSo I answeredוָאֹמַ֖ר (wā·’ō·mar)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 559: To utter, saythem,אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (’ă·lê·hem)Preposition | third person masculine pluralStrong's 413: Near, with, among, to“The wordדְּבַ֨ר־ (də·ḇar-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causeof the LORDיְהוָ֔ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelcameהָיָ֥ה (hā·yāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beto me,אֵלַ֖י (’ê·lay)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tosaying:לֵאמֹֽר׃ (lê·mōr)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 559: To utter, sayJump to PreviousWord
