Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(30) Against thee.--Rather, over thee. The commercial nations were not inimical to Tyre, but rather caused their wail for her to be heard over the seas where she had been engulphed. The usual signs of mourning are poetically attributed to them (Ezekiel 27:30-31), and then a dirge is put in their mouths (Ezekiel 27:32-34).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThey will raiseוְהִשְׁמִ֤יעוּ (wə·hiš·mî·‘ū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlytheir voicesבְּקוֹלָ֔ם (bə·qō·w·lām)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 6963: A voice, soundfor youעָלַ֙יִךְ֙ (‘ā·la·yiḵ)Preposition | second person feminine singularStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstand cry outוְיִזְעֲק֖וּ (wə·yiz·‘ă·qū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 2199: To shriek, to announce, convene publiclybitterly.מָרָ֑ה (mā·rāh)Adjective - feminine singularStrong's 4751: Bitter, bitterness, bitterlyThey will throwוְיַעֲל֤וּ (wə·ya·‘ă·lū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 5927: To ascend, in, activelydustעָֽפָר֙ (‘ā·p̄ār)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6083: Dust, clay, earth, mudonעַל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againsttheir headsרָ֣אשֵׁיהֶ֔ם (rā·šê·hem)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 7218: The headand rollיִתְפַּלָּֽשׁוּ׃ (yiṯ·pal·lā·šū)Verb - Hitpael - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 6428: (act of mourning) perhaps to roll inin ashes.בָּאֵ֖פֶר (bā·’ê·p̄er)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 665: AshesJump to PreviousAloud Ashes Bitterly Cast Cause Cry Crying Dust Heads Heard Raise Roll Rolling Sounded Sounding Sprinkle Themselves Voice Voices Wail Wallow
