Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(13) Will destroy also all the beasts thereof from beside the great waters.--The figurative description of this and the following verses is taken from the vast herds of cattle in Egypt going to the river to drink, and trampling the banks and disturbing the water with their feet (comp. Ezekiel 32:2). These represent the restless activity and stir of Egyptian life, and its constant disturbance of surrounding nations. With its conquest all this ceases, and, restrained within its own boundaries, Egypt shall no longer be a disturber.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewI will slaughterוְהַֽאֲבַדְתִּי֙ (wə·ha·’ă·ḇaḏ·tî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 6: To wander away, lose oneself, to perishallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyher cattleבְּהֶמְתָּ֔הּ (bə·hem·tāh)Noun - feminine singular construct | third person feminine singularStrong's 929: A dumb beast, any large quadruped, animalbesideמֵעַ֖ל (mê·‘al)Preposition-mStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe abundantרַבִּ֑ים (rab·bîm)Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 7227: Much, many, greatwaters.מַ֣יִם (ma·yim)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 4325: Water, juice, urine, semenNoוְלֹ֨א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nohumanאָדָם֙ (’ā·ḏām)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 120: Ruddy, a human beingfootרֶֽגֶל־ (re·ḡel-)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 7272: A foot, a step, the pudendawill muddyתִדְלָחֵ֤ם (ṯiḏ·lā·ḥêm)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 1804: To make turbidthem again,ע֔וֹד (‘ō·wḏ)AdverbStrong's 5750: Iteration, continuance, again, repeatedly, still, moreand noלֹ֥א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nocattleבְּהֵמָ֖ה (bə·hê·māh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 929: A dumb beast, any large quadruped, animalhoovesוּפַרְס֥וֹת (ū·p̄ar·sō·wṯ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - feminine plural constructStrong's 6541: A claw, split hoofwill disturb them.תִדְלָחֵֽם׃ (ṯiḏ·lā·ḥêm)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 1804: To make turbidJump to PreviousAbundant Animals Anymore Beasts Cattle Cloven Destroy Destroyed Disturb Foot Great Hoofs Longer Muddied Muddy Stirred Thereof Trouble Troubled Waters
