Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) The east country.--By this is meant Arabia and Southern Mesopotamia, where, by their superior vigour and organisation, the descendants of Abraham were able to establish their supremacy over the natives. Burckhardt tells us that the Bedaween still follow Abraham's practice. When their children are grown up, they give each of the younger sons his share of their goods (Luke 15:12), whereupon they move to a distance, and leave the eldest brother in quiet possession of the home.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewBut while he was stillבְּעוֹדֶ֣נּוּ (bə·‘ō·w·ḏen·nū)Preposition-b | Adverb | third person masculine singularStrong's 5750: Iteration, continuance, again, repeatedly, still, morealive,חַ֔י (ḥay)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2416: Alive, raw, fresh, strong, lifeAbrahamלְאַבְרָהָ֔ם (lə·’aḇ·rā·hām)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 85: Abraham -- 'exalted father', the father of the Jewish nationgaveנָתַ֥ן (nā·ṯan)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 5414: To give, put, setgiftsמַתָּנֹ֑ת (mat·tā·nōṯ)Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 4979: A present, a sacrificial offering, a bribeto the sonsוְלִבְנֵ֤י (wə·liḇ·nê)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Noun - masculine plural constructStrong's 1121: A sonof hisאֲשֶׁ֣ר (’ă·šer)Pronoun - relativeStrong's 834: Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order thatconcubinesהַפִּֽילַגְשִׁים֙ (hap·pî·laḡ·šîm)Article | Noun - feminine pluralStrong's 6370: A concubine, a paramourand sent them awayוַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֞ם (way·šal·lə·ḥêm)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 7971: To send away, for, outfromמֵעַ֨ל (mê·‘al)Preposition-mStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againsthis sonבְּנוֹ֙ (bə·nōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 1121: A sonIsaacיִצְחָ֤ק (yiṣ·ḥāq)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3327: Isaac -- 'he laughs', son of Abraham and Sarahtoאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothe landאֶ֥רֶץ (’e·reṣ)Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 776: Earth, landof the east.קֶֽדֶם׃ (qe·ḏem)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 6924: The front, of place, timeJump to PreviousAbraham Abraham's Alive Concubines Country East Eastward Gifts Isaac Offerings Women
