Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(15) He hath sold us.--There is a marked asperity towards their father in the answer of Jacob's wives, and not only the petted Rachel but the neglected Leah joins in it. Now, though his sale of them to Jacob had been more open than Oriental good manners usually allowed, and though he seems to have acted meanly in giving no portion with them, yet these were old sores, long since healed and forgiven. Laban must have been stingy, grasping, and over-reaching in recent times, to have kept the memory of old wrongs so fresh in the minds of his daughters.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewAre we notהֲל֧וֹא (hă·lō·w)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noregardedנֶחְשַׁ֥בְנוּ (neḥ·šaḇ·nū)Verb - Nifal - Perfect - first person common pluralStrong's 2803: To think, accountby himל֖וֹ (lōw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's Hebrew as outsiders?נָכְרִיּ֛וֹת (nā·ḵə·rî·yō·wṯ)Adjective - feminine pluralStrong's 5237: Foreign, alienNot onlyכִּ֣י (kî)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionhas he sold us,מְכָרָ֑נוּ (mə·ḵā·rā·nū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singular | first person common pluralStrong's 4376: To sellbut he hasגַּם־ (gam-)ConjunctionStrong's 1571: Assemblage, also, even, yea, though, both, andcertainly squanderedוַיֹּ֥אכַל (way·yō·ḵal)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 398: To eatthe money paid for us.כַּסְפֵּֽנוּ׃ (kas·pê·nū)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common pluralStrong's 3701: Silver, moneyJump to PreviousAccounted Constantly Consumed Consumeth Counted Country Devoured Entirely Foreigners Money Price Purchase Quite Reckoned Regard Regarded Sold Strange Strangers Used Using Utterly
