Pulpit Commentary

Pulpit CommentaryVerse 37. - And Samlah died, and Saul "Asked" (Gesenius) - of Rehoboth by the river - Rehoboth .(literally, wide spaces) of the River is so called to distinguish it from the Asshurite settlement of the same name in Genesis 10:11 (Rosenmüller), though by some it is identified with Rehoboth Ir (Ainsworth). If the river spoken of be the Euphrates (Onkelos, Keil, Kalisch), then it is probably to be sought for in the Errachabi or Racha-beh near the mouth of the Chaboras (Keil), though the river may be some small nahar in Idumea (Lange), in which case the site will be uncertain - reigned in his stead.

Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(37) Rehoboth by the river.--Heb., Rehoboth hannahar, Rehoboth-of-the-river, so called, perhaps, to distinguish it from Rehoboth-ir (Genesis 10:11). If the river is the Euphrates, this city was not on Edomite ground, and Saul probably reigned in Idumea by right of conquest.
