Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(20) Bring your youngest brother.--Besides his desire to be re-united to his brother, Joseph reasonably felt that the possession of Benjamin would be the best means of inducing his father also to come to him. While substituting a much milder proposal for his former one, that nine should remain in prison, and the tenth go to fetch Benjamin, Joseph nevertheless takes care to make his brethren feel that he was in earnest.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThenוְאֶת־ (wə·’eṯ-)Conjunctive waw | Direct object markerStrong's 853: Untranslatable mark of the accusative casebringתָּבִ֣יאוּ (tā·ḇî·’ū)Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goyour youngestהַקָּטֹן֙ (haq·qā·ṭōn)Article | Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 6996: Small, young, unimportantbrotherאֲחִיכֶ֤ם (’ă·ḥî·ḵem)Noun - masculine singular construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 251: A brother, )to meאֵלַ֔י (’ê·lay)Preposition | first person common singularStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toso that your wordsדִבְרֵיכֶ֖ם (ḏiḇ·rê·ḵem)Noun - masculine plural construct | second person masculine pluralStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causecan be verified,וְיֵאָמְנ֥וּ (wə·yê·’ā·mə·nū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Nifal - Conjunctive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 539: To confirm, supportthat you may notוְלֹ֣א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nodie.”תָמ֑וּתוּ (ṯā·mū·ṯū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine pluralStrong's 4191: To die, to killAnd to thisכֵֽן׃ (ḵên)AdverbStrong's 3651: So -- thusthey consented.וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־ (way·ya·‘ă·śū-)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 6213: To do, makeJump to PreviousDeath Die Established Order Proceeded True.
