Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(28) And Israel said.--We must not lay too much stress upon this change of name, as though it were a title appropriate to the patriarch only in his happier and triumphant hours; for in Genesis 45:6 it-is given him in the midst of his distress. It rather shows that the names were long both in use as regards the patriarch personally, but as the title of Israel was alone given to Jacob's family, it is plain that a high significance was attached to it, and that the inheritance of the Abrahamic promises was at an early date connected therewith.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThen Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (yiś·rā·’êl)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his descdeclared,וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (way·yō·mer)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say“I am convinced!רַ֛ב (raḇ)AdverbStrong's 7227: Much, many, greatMy sonבְּנִ֖י (bə·nî)Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 1121: A sonJosephיוֹסֵ֥ף (yō·w·sêp̄)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3130: Joseph -- 'he increases', a son of Jacob, also the name of several Israelitesis stillעוֹד־ (‘ō·wḏ-)AdverbStrong's 5750: Iteration, continuance, again, repeatedly, still, morealive!חָ֑י (ḥāy)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 2416: Alive, raw, fresh, strong, lifeI will goאֵֽלְכָ֥ה (’ê·lə·ḵāh)Verb - Qal - Imperfect Cohortative - first person common singularStrong's 1980: To go, come, walkto seeוְאֶרְאֶ֖נּוּ (wə·’er·’en·nū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive imperfect Cohortative if contextual - first person common singular | third person masculine singularStrong's 7200: To seehim beforeבְּטֶ֥רֶם (bə·ṭe·rem)Preposition-b | AdverbStrong's 2962: Non-occurrence, not yet, beforeI die.”אָמֽוּת׃ (’ā·mūṯ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 4191: To die, to killJump to PreviousAlive Convinced Death Die Enough I'm Israel Joseph
