Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) Their goods.--These are not the vessels spoken of contemptuously by Pharaoh (Genesis 45:20), but their personal property, of which they would naturally have much which they would not be willing to leave behind. Abraham had brought large wealth with him from Haran (Genesis 12:5), some of which may have even come from Ur-Chasdim, and much had been gathered since. The patriarchs would leave their household stuff behind, but all valuables, and the records of their house, and their toldoth, they would carefully carry with them. They . . . came into Egypt.--For a full account of the scene depicted on the tomb of Khnum-hotep at Beni-hassan, and which at one time was identified with the arrival of the sons of Jacob, see Tomkins, Times of Abraham, 110-114.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThey also tookוַיִּקְח֣וּ (way·yiq·ḥū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 3947: To taketheir livestockמִקְנֵיהֶ֗ם (miq·nê·hem)Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 4735: Something bought, property, livestock, acquisitionand the possessionsרְכוּשָׁם֙ (rə·ḵū·šām)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 7399: Property, goodsthey had acquiredרָֽכְשׁוּ֙ (rā·ḵə·šū)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person common pluralStrong's 7408: To collect, gather (property)in the landבְּאֶ֣רֶץ (bə·’e·reṣ)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 776: Earth, landof Canaan,כְּנַ֔עַן (kə·na·‘an)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3667: Canaan -- a son of Ham, also his descendants and their land West of the Jordanand Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖ב (ya·‘ă·qōḇ)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3290: Jacob -- a son of Isaac, also his descand allוְכָל־ (wə·ḵāl)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyhis offspringזַרְע֥וֹ (zar·‘ōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 2233: Seed, fruit, plant, sowing-time, posteritywentוַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (way·yā·ḇō·’ū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 935: To come in, come, go in, goto Egypt.מִצְרָ֑יְמָה (miṣ·rā·yə·māh)Noun - proper - feminine singular | third person feminine singularStrong's 4714: Egypt -- a son of Ham, also his descendants and their country in Northwest AfricaJump to PreviousAcquired Canaan Cattle Descendants Egypt Gained Goods Gotten Jacob Livestock Offspring Possessions Property Seed
