Pulpit CommentaryVerse 17. - And when (literally, and) Joseph saw that his father laid (or was laying) his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: - literally, and it was evil in his eyes (cf. Genesis 28:8) - and (supposing his father had made a mistake) he held up (or took hold of) his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head.
