Pulpit CommentaryVerse 12. - The gate is smitten with destruction. The very gates of the towns, generally guarded with such care, are broken down and lie in ruins.

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(12) In the city is left desolation.--Better, of the city. Nothing should be left but its crumbling ruins. The "gate," usually, in an Eastern town, the pride of the city, and the chief place of concourse, had been battered till it lay in ruins.
