Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(2) In the thirteenth year of his reign.--If we take the data of 2 Kings 22, Josiah was at that time in his twentieth or twenty-first year, having grown up under the training of Hilkiah. His active work of reformation began five years later. The images of Baal and Asherah (the groves) were thrown down, and the high places desecrated. The near coincidence of the commencement of Jeremiah's work as prophet with that of the king must not be forgotten. As Josiah reigned for thirty-one years, we have to place eighteen years of the prophet's ministry as under his rule.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewThe wordדְבַר־ (ḏə·ḇar-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causeof the LORDיְהוָה֙ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelcameהָיָ֤ה (hā·yāh)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, beto [Jeremiah]אֵלָ֔יו (’ê·lāw)Preposition | third person masculine singularStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toin the thirteenthבִּשְׁלֹשׁ־ (biš·lōš-)Preposition-b | Number - feminine singular constructStrong's 7969: Three, third, thriceyearשָׁנָ֖ה (šā·nāh)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 8141: A yearof the reignלְמָלְכֽוֹ׃ (lə·mā·lə·ḵōw)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 4427: To reign, inceptively, to ascend the throne, to induct into royalty, to take counselof Josiahיֹאשִׁיָּ֥הוּ (yō·šî·yā·hū)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 2977: Josiah -- 'Yah supports', two Israelitessonבֶן־ (ḇen-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 1121: A sonof Amonאָמ֖וֹן (’ā·mō·wn)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 526: Amon -- 'masterworkman', three Israeliteskingמֶ֣לֶךְ (me·leḵ)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 4428: A kingof Judah,יְהוּדָ֑ה (yə·hū·ḏāh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3063: Judah -- 'praised', a son of Jacob, also the southern kingdom, also four IsraelitesJump to PreviousAmon Josiah Josi'ah Judah Reign Rule Thirteenth Word
