Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(8) Be not afraid.--The words imply, as in those spoken to Ezekiel (Ezekiel 2:6), to St. Peter (Luke 5:10), and St. Paul (Acts 18:9), the fear that sprang from the sense of personal weakness and unfitness to cope with the dangers to which his work exposed him. The "faces" of his adversaries would be a source of terror to him. The consciousness that Jehovah was with him was to raise him from that timidity.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewDo notאַל־ (’al-)AdverbStrong's 408: Notbe afraidתִּירָ֖א (tî·rā)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 3372: To fear, to revere, caus, to frightenof them,מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם (mip·pə·nê·hem)Preposition-m | Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 6440: The faceforכִּֽי־ (kî-)ConjunctionStrong's 3588: A relative conjunctionI [am]אֲנִ֛י (’ă·nî)Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Iwith youאִתְּךָ֥ (’it·tə·ḵā)Preposition | second person masculine singularStrong's 854: Nearness, near, with, by, at, amongto deliver you,”לְהַצִּלֶ֖ךָ (lə·haṣ·ṣi·le·ḵā)Preposition-l | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive construct | second person masculine singularStrong's 5337: To strip, plunder, deliver oneself, be delivered, snatch away, deliverdeclaresנְאֻם־ (nə·’um-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5002: An oraclethe LORD.יְהוָֽה׃ (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3069: YHWHJump to PreviousAffirmation Afraid Declares Deliver Faces Fear Rescue Safe
