Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(10) Imagination.--Better, as before, stubbornness.Shall even be as this girdle.--The same thought is reproduced in the imagery of the potter's vessel in Jeremiah 18:4. On the other hand there is a partial reversal of the sentence in Jeremiah 24:5, where the "good figs" represent the exiles who learnt repentance from their sufferings, and the "bad" those who still remained at Jerusalem under Zedekiah.Which is good for nothing.--Better, profitable for nothing, the Hebrew verse being the same as in Jeremiah 13:7.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewTheseהַזֶּ֨ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatevilהָרָ֜ע (hā·rā‘)Article | Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 7451: Bad, evilpeople,הָעָם֩ (hā·‘ām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 5971: A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flockwho refuseהַֽמֵּאֲנִ֣ים ׀ (ham·mê·’ă·nîm)Article | Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 3987: Refractoryto listenלִשְׁמ֣וֹעַ (liš·mō·w·a‘)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive constructStrong's 8085: To hear intelligentlyto My words,דְּבָרַ֗י (də·ḇā·ray)Noun - masculine plural construct | first person common singularStrong's 1697: A word, a matter, thing, a causewho followהַהֹֽלְכִים֙ (ha·hō·lə·ḵîm)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 1980: To go, come, walkthe stubbornnessבִּשְׁרִר֣וּת (biš·ri·rūṯ)Preposition-b | Noun - feminine singular constructStrong's 8307: Firmness, stubbornnessof their own hearts,לִבָּ֔ם (lib·bām)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 3820: The heart, the feelings, the will, the intellect, centreand who goוַיֵּלְכ֗וּ (way·yê·lə·ḵū)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1980: To go, come, walkafterאַֽחֲרֵי֙ (’a·ḥă·rê)PrepositionStrong's 310: The hind or following partotherאֲחֵרִ֔ים (’ă·ḥê·rîm)Adjective - masculine pluralStrong's 312: Hinder, next, othergodsאֱלֹהִ֣ים (’ĕ·lō·hîm)Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 430: gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlativeto serveלְעָבְדָ֖ם (lə·‘ā·ḇə·ḏām)Preposition-l | Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5647: To work, to serve, till, enslaveand worshipוּלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֣ת (ū·lə·hiš·ta·ḥă·wōṯ)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-l | Verb - Hitpael - Infinitive constructStrong's 7812: To depress, prostratethem,לָהֶ֑ם (lā·hem)Preposition-l | Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: Theythey will beוִיהִי֙ (wî·hî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive imperfect Jussive - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, belike thisהַזֶּ֔ה (haz·zeh)Article | Pronoun - masculine singularStrong's 2088: This, thatloincloth—כָּאֵז֣וֹר (kā·’ê·zō·wr)Preposition-k, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 232: Something girt, a belt, a bandof noלֹא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nouseיִצְלַ֖ח (yiṣ·laḥ)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 6743: To push forwardat all.לַכֹּֽל׃ (lak·kōl)Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everyJump to PreviousBand Belt Bow Completely Ear Evil Follow Girdle Gods Good Hear Heart Hearts Imagination Pride Profitable Refuse Servants Serve Stubbornly Stubbornness Totally Use Useless Waistband Walk Wicked Words Worship Worthless
