Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(13) The kings that sit upon David's throne.--Literally, that sit for David (i.e., as his successors and representatives) on his throne. The plural is probably used in pointing to the four--Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah--who were all of them involved in the sufferings that fell on Judah. With drunkenness.--The intoxication of the "strong drink"--here, probably, palm-wine--rather than that of the juice of the grape, involving more confusion and loss of power.Parallel Commentaries ...Hebrewthen you are to tellוְאָמַרְתָּ֨ (wə·’ā·mar·tā)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - second person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, saythemאֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (’ă·lê·hem)Preposition | third person masculine pluralStrong's 413: Near, with, among, tothat this is whatכֹּֽה־ (kōh-)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe LORDיְהוָ֗ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelsays:אָמַ֣ר (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, say‘I am going to fillמְמַלֵּ֣א (mə·mal·lê)Verb - Piel - Participle - masculine singularStrong's 4390: To fill, be full ofwith drunkennessשִׁכָּרֽוֹן׃ (šik·kā·rō·wn)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7943: Intoxicationallכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everywho liveיֹשְׁבֵ֣י (yō·šə·ḇê)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryin thisהַזֹּ֟את (haz·zōṯ)Article | Pronoun - feminine singularStrong's 2063: Hereby in it, likewise, the one other, same, she, so much, such deed, that, land—הָאָ֪רֶץ (hā·’ā·reṣ)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landthe kingsהַמְּלָכִ֣ים (ham·mə·lā·ḵîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 4428: A kingwho sitהַיֹּשְׁבִים֩ (hay·yō·šə·ḇîm)Article | Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryon David’sלְדָוִ֨ד (lə·ḏā·wiḏ)Preposition-l | Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 1732: David -- perhaps 'beloved one', a son of Jessethrone,כִּסְא֜וֹ (kis·’ōw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 3678: Seat of honor, thronethe priests,הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים (hak·kō·hă·nîm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 3548: Priestthe prophets,הַנְּבִיאִ֗ים (han·nə·ḇî·’îm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 5030: A spokesman, speaker, prophetand allכָּל־ (kāl-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 3605: The whole, all, any, everythe peopleיֹשְׁבֵ֥י (yō·šə·ḇê)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryof Jerusalem.יְרוּשָׁלִָ֖ם (yə·rū·šā·lim)Noun - proper - feminine singularStrong's 3389: Jerusalem -- probably 'foundation of peace', capital city of all IsraelJump to PreviousDavid's Drunkenness Fill Inhabitants Jerusalem Kings Priests Prophets Sit Throne
