Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(14) One against another.--The rendering answers to the Hebrew idiom, but that idiom, as in the margin, a man against his brother, has a force which is lacking in the English, and forms a transition from the symbol to the reality. The words point to what we should call the "crash" of a falling kingdom, when all bonds that keep society together are broken.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewI will smashוְנִפַּצְתִּים֩ (wə·nip·paṣ·tîm)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 5310: To dash to pieces, scatterthem againstאֶל־ (’el-)PrepositionStrong's 413: Near, with, among, toeachאִ֨ישׁ (’îš)Noun - masculine singularStrong's 376: A man as an individual, a male personother,אָחִ֜יו (’ā·ḥîw)Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singularStrong's 251: A brother, )fathersוְהָאָב֧וֹת (wə·hā·’ā·ḇō·wṯ)Conjunctive waw, Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1: Fatherand sonsוְהַבָּנִ֛ים (wə·hab·bā·nîm)Conjunctive waw, Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 1121: A sonalike,יַחְדָּ֖ו (yaḥ·dāw)AdverbStrong's 3162: A unit, unitedlydeclaresנְאֻם־ (nə·’um-)Noun - masculine singular constructStrong's 5002: An oraclethe LORD.יְהוָ֑ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of IsraelI will allow noלֹֽא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nomercyאֶחְמ֧וֹל (’eḥ·mō·wl)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 2550: To commiserate, to spare[or]וְלֹֽא־ (wə·lō-)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nopityאָח֛וּס (’ā·ḥūs)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 2347: To pity, look upon with compassion[or]וְלֹ֥א (wə·lō)Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nocompassionאֲרַחֵ֖ם (’ă·ra·ḥêm)Verb - Piel - Imperfect - first person common singularStrong's 7355: To fondle, to love, to compassionateto keep Me from destroyingמֵהַשְׁחִיתָֽם׃ (mê·haš·ḥî·ṯām)Preposition-m | Verb - Hifil - Infinitive construct | third person masculine pluralStrong's 7843: Perhaps to go to ruinthem.’”ס (s)PunctuationStrong's Hebrew Jump to PreviousAffirmation Alike Allow Compassion Dash Dashed Declares Destroy Destruction Fathers Feeling Mercy Pity Show Smash Smashed Sorry Spare Together
