Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(15) Therefore thus saith the Lord.--To the mind of a true prophet, feeling that he was taught of God, nothing could be more hateful than the acts of those who, for selfish ends, were leading the people to their destruction. For them there was therefore the righteous retribution that they should perish in the very calamities which they had asserted would never come.Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewTherefore,לָכֵ֞ן (lā·ḵên)AdverbStrong's 3651: So -- thusthis is whatכֹּֽה־ (kōh-)AdverbStrong's 3541: Like this, thus, here, nowthe LORDיְהוָ֗ה (Yah·weh)Noun - proper - masculine singularStrong's 3068: LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israelsaysאָמַ֣ר (’ā·mar)Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 559: To utter, sayaboutעַֽל־ (‘al-)PrepositionStrong's 5921: Above, over, upon, againstthe prophetsהַנְּבִאִ֞ים (han·nə·ḇi·’îm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 5030: A spokesman, speaker, prophetwho prophesyהַנִּבְּאִ֣ים (han·nib·bə·’îm)Article | Verb - Nifal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 5012: To prophesy, speak, by inspirationin My name,בִּשְׁמִי֮ (biš·mî)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singularStrong's 8034: A namethough Iוַאֲנִ֣י (wa·’ă·nî)Conjunctive waw | Pronoun - first person common singularStrong's 589: Idid notלֹֽא־ (lō-)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, nosend them,שְׁלַחְתִּים֒ (šə·laḥ·tîm)Verb - Qal - Perfect - first person common singular | third person masculine pluralStrong's 7971: To send away, for, outand whoוְהֵ֙מָּה֙ (wə·hêm·māh)Conjunctive waw | Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: Theysay,אֹֽמְרִ֔ים (’ō·mə·rîm)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine pluralStrong's 559: To utter, say‘Noלֹ֥א (lō)Adverb - Negative particleStrong's 3808: Not, noswordחֶ֣רֶב (ḥe·reḇ)Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2719: Drought, a cutting instrument, as a, knife, swordor famineוְרָעָ֔ב (wə·rā·‘āḇ)Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7458: Famine, hungerwill touchיִהְיֶ֖ה (yih·yeh)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singularStrong's 1961: To fall out, come to pass, become, bethisהַזֹּ֑את (haz·zōṯ)Article | Pronoun - feminine singularStrong's 2063: Hereby in it, likewise, the one other, same, she, so much, such deed, that, land.’בָּאָ֣רֶץ (bā·’ā·reṣ)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 776: Earth, landBy swordבַּחֶ֤רֶב (ba·ḥe·reḇ)Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 2719: Drought, a cutting instrument, as a, knife, swordand famineוּבָֽרָעָב֙ (ū·ḇā·rā·‘āḇ)Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 7458: Famine, hungerthese veryהָהֵֽמָּה׃ (hā·hêm·māh)Article | Pronoun - third person masculine pluralStrong's 1992: Theyprophetsהַנְּבִאִ֖ים (han·nə·ḇi·’îm)Article | Noun - masculine pluralStrong's 5030: A spokesman, speaker, prophetwill meet their end!יִתַּ֔מּוּ (yit·tam·mū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 8552: To be complete or finishedJump to PreviousAlthough Consumed End Famine Food Meet Need Perish Prophesy Prophesying Prophets Sword Touch Use
