Ellicott's Commentary

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(6) They shall die of a great pestilence.--This was doubtless, as in other instances (Thuc. ii. 52), the natural consequence of the siege, but it came before the people as another proof that Jehovah had stretched out his arm against them, that they were fighting against that arm as well as against the host of the invaders. The "outstretched hand" may be noted as another Deuteronomic phrase (Deuteronomy 4:34; Deuteronomy 5:15; Deuteronomy 26:8).Parallel Commentaries ...HebrewI will strike downוְהִכֵּיתִ֗י (wə·hik·kê·ṯî)Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - first person common singularStrong's 5221: To strikethe residentsיֽוֹשְׁבֵי֙ (yō·wō·šə·ḇê)Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine plural constructStrong's 3427: To sit down, to dwell, to remain, to settle, to marryof thisהַזֹּ֔את (haz·zōṯ)Article | Pronoun - feminine singularStrong's 2063: Hereby in it, likewise, the one other, same, she, so much, such deed, that, city,הָעִ֣יר (hā·‘îr)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 5892: Excitementboth manהָאָדָ֖ם (hā·’ā·ḏām)Article | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 120: Ruddy, a human beingand beast.הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה (hab·bə·hê·māh)Article | Noun - feminine singularStrong's 929: A dumb beast, any large quadruped, animalThey will dieיָמֻֽתוּ׃ (yā·mu·ṯū)Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine pluralStrong's 4191: To die, to killin a terribleגָּד֖וֹל (gā·ḏō·wl)Adjective - masculine singularStrong's 1419: Great, older, insolentplague.בְּדֶ֥בֶר (bə·ḏe·ḇer)Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singularStrong's 1698: A pestilenceJump to PreviousAnimal Animals Beast Causing City Death Die Disease Great Inhabitants Live Pestilence Plague Smite Smitten Strike Terrible
